For more than fifty-five years, Champion has been helping Americans realize their home ownership dreams.
Champion was founded in 1953, in Dryden, Michigan, by Walter W. Clark and Henry E. George. During that first year, each home was built by hand at a pace of two per week. As of January 2009, Champion has built over 1.7 million homes and continues to transform the factory-built housing industry by expanding its product offerings and developing creative solutions for affordable, quality housing.
Throughout the past half century, Champion has built travel trailers, RVs, trailer homes, campers, commercial buses, and mobile homes. Today, we focus primarily on building innovative manufactured homes and modular homes, as well as modular buildings for government and commercial applications.
As we’ve grown over the years, Champion has acquired some of the most well-known and respected brand names in the industry. They include Caledonian Building Systems, Carolina Building Solutions, Commander, Dutch, Fortune, Highland Manufacturing, Homes of Merit, Moduline, New Era, New Image, North American, Redman, Silvercrest, SRI and Titan. And our growth continues with more than 11,000 factory-built homes produced by Champion’s family of homebuilders last year.
From mobile to manufactured to modular homes, Champion is an industry innovator.
Champion has always fostered change and innovation in the factory-built housing industry. We realize that change allows our company to grow and remain strong. By thinking ahead, we’ve accomplished more. For example:
In 2001, Champion was the first manufactured housing company to receive Energy Star® certification from the United States Department of Energy.
In 2002, the DOE named us Energy Star Partner of the Year, making Champion the first in the manufactured home industry to earn this distinction.
In 2003, Champion introduced the The Ultimate Kitchen.
With glamorous features such as stainless steel G.E.® appliances, a euro-style range hood, designer accents and more, this popular kitchen option has been integrated into more than 8,000 homes sold across the U.S.
In 2005 and 2006, Champion partnered with Country Living Magazine to build the “Country Living Home of the Year.”
Also in 2005, Champion was the first manufacturer to build privatized modular housing for the military.
In 2006, Champion introduced the Suite Retreat,
a luxurious master bath design featuring a glass surround shower, oversized tub, plantation shutters, electric fireplace, large furniture-style vanity and more.
In the past eight years, Champion has received 17 industry design awards including “Best New Home Design” and “Excellence in Home Design” from the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB).
Champion builds for the future.
Champion has expanded beyond its North American base with the acquisition of Caledonian Building Systems in the United Kingdom. Caledonian shares Champion’s innovative passion and leads the UK in the production of steel-framed modular buildings. Together, we continue to make a statement both here and abroad by gearing our focus towards creative residential and commercial solutions.
